History of the Mendenhall Surname in England

Notes

80. William Mendenhall

Although baptised as a Mendenall, William used the Mendenhall surname throughout his adult life. He became a Writing Master (English teacher) and was a vice-president of the Bath Mechanics Institution which he helped to found. It later became the Bath Athenaeum and was its librarian until shortly before his death. It subsequently amalgamated with the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution which continues to this day.
Around 1828 when he was about 50 years old, William was sent a US Gazetteer by a friend in America. An article in it was authored by an Aaron Mendenhall. He later wrote "… not having seen the name in print, my curiosity was at once excited, and I wrote to that gentleman." Thus began his research into the family and its surname. It ended with him and his son Edward documenting the 'History, Correspondence and Pedigrees of the Mendenhalls of England and the United States'.

See original source (MFA) for extensive notes on William and his background.
