[Weymouth] Borough Petty Sessions: James and George Mendenhall were summoned for causing an obstruction in St. Mary Street. P.C. Carter stated that on Saturday night last the defendants were in the street with some trucks shouting and annoying everyone who passed. He ordered them away, any they moved about the length of the trucks and stopped again. They were hawking oranges, and and remained in the street from about seven o'clock until ten. Several of the shopkeepers complained of the annoyance caused by the defendants. Sergeant Apsey proved hearing James Mendenhall shouting in the street at the top of his voice, and when remonstrated with he became very abusive. When told he must not make so much noise he said he was paid to do so. George Mendenhall was further summoned for hawking goods without having a market-house ticket. Supt. Vickery said the reason he had summoned this party was because two or three people were in the habit of selling goods from one barrow with only one ticket. This practise was not confined to vendors of oranges, but people engaged in the sale of fish. James Mendenhall prodiuced his ticket, and siad he only asked his brother to assist him for a few minutes, as he had more customers than he could attend to. The Mayor said this street nuisance must be stopped, and defendants would be fined 2s and 6d each; the other summonses would be dismissed.

Mendenhall in recognition of the courage displayed by him in jumping off the harbour wall, a distance of about 18 feet, to save the life of a little child, this not being the first time he has shown courage in similar cases. The members of the lodge were pleased to order that it be nicely framed and handed over to Bro. Mendenhall. [Possibly not George but his brother James instead.]

Georgina Mendenhall, a married woman living in Governor's Lane, gives evidence at an inquest.

1893 Oct 20 - Western Chronicle:
1893 Oct 21 - Weymouth Telegram:
A Short Illmess.— Sir R. N. Howard held an inquest on Wednesday evening, at the Guildhall the body of Harriett Baker, a married woman, 67 years of age, a resident 13, Governer’s Lane, appears deceased, who has not lived with her husband for great many years, was very well until after having tea on Tuesday evening, when she complained of having a violent pain in her stomach, and went to bed. A neighbour was called, who gave her some brandy and water, and she appeared easier. About one o’clock Wm. Langdon, a bricklayer, who resides in the bouse, was awakened by hearing a heavy fall, and going into deceased’s bedroom found her on the ground her head resting on the sofa. He called the next door neighbour, Mrs. Mendenhall, who had been in previously, and she was placed the bed, when was found she was dead. Mr. Snook, Surgeon, was called in and gave it his opinion that death had resulted from a fit of apoplexy. The jury returned a verdict accordingly.

1893 Oct 21 - Southern Times and Dorset County Herald:
Death from the effects of a fit.—An inquest was held at the Guildhall on Wednesday evening, before Sir R. N. Howard (coroner), on the body of Harriet Baker, of Governor's-lane, 67 years of age, who died on Tuesday night. William Langdon, a bricklayer, said he resided at 13, Governor's-Lane where the deceased also lived. She was the wife of John Baker, but lived apart from her husband. Last night he (witness) had tea with her about half-past five, when she appeared quite well and cheerful. She afterwards went to the yard, and on her return complained of having great pains in her stomach, and went to bed. She asked him to go to a neighbour's house for assistance and he called Mrs. Mendenhall, who came and gave her a little brandy, and then left. About half-pa-st nine deceased was sick, and he fetched Mrs. Mendenhall again. She remained about a quarter of an hour and then left, deceased saying she was better. He went to bad, but about twenty to one was awoke by hearing a crash in deceased's room. He went in and found her stretched on the floor, with her head on the fender, and on trying to lift her found her unconscious. He then called for Mrs. Mendenhall and with her assistance raised her, when they found she was dead. A policeman was told of what had occurred, and came in. He (witness) had lodged with Mrs. Baker's family for the last 20 years. Deceased was not subject to fits, but some six years ago had a slight seizure, for which she was attended by Dr. Carter. Georgina Mendenhall, a married woman, living next door to the deceased said she had known her for two years, and proved going in to see her last night, giving her a little brandy and water and getting her into bed. About one o'clock that morning she was called by the last witness, and on going into her bedroom, found her with her bead on the fender. They raised her, and she rubbed her a little thinking she might have a fit, but soon found she was dead. Witness was of opinion deceased must have had a fit. Mr. Samuel Penny Snook, a medical pratititiona, said he was sent for at ten minutes past one that morning to see deceased. On arrival he found her dead. She had a slight bruise or two where she had fallen on the fender. He thought from the evidence be had heard, and the examination he had made, that the cause of death was the result of a fit of apoplexy. The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence.

WEYMOUTH. Inquest.—On Saturday Sir K. N. Howird, coroner. held an inquest at the Guildhall, on Saturday, touching the death of Mary Lock, a widow, aged 69, of Clarke’s Court, East Street, which occurred under the following ciicumatances:- Annie Stone, niece of deceased, who lived with her, said her aunt complained of pains in her head and giddiness, and on Easter Monday witness obtained an order for the parish doctor to see her. Dr. Browning saw her that day and prescribed for her. She continued under his treatment, but subsequently was attacked with diarrhea, and witness on the lOth inst., called in Dr. Drury, who said he would send her some medicine, but did not think it would do her any good, she was too far gone. She died on Thursday, the 12th. Dr. Browning saw her on the previous day and said she was dying. Witness went to both doctors for certificate of death, but both refused give one. Georgina Mendenhall, neighbour, stated that she sat up with deceased on Tuesday night and remained with her up to the time of her death. She complained of pains in her head, and for about two days before her death she was nearly speechless. Mr. A. E. Drury said that when he saw deceased on Tuesday she was very weak and emaciated and was suffering from heart disease, diarrhea, and great pains in the abdomen. He prescribed for her and sent some medicine by a messenger, though thought she was too far gone for medicine to do her any good. The cause of death was heart disease, hastened by diarrhea and exhaustion consequent thereon. As he only saw the patient in the dying condition he did not give a certificate. The jury returned a verdict accordingly.

1894 Nov 03 - Southern Times and Dorset County Herald:
A CHRISTENING CEREMONY PREVENTED BY DEATH. At the Guildhall, on Monday afternoon, Sir R. Howard. coroner, and a jury of whom Mr. John Alford was foreman, were engaged in investigating the circumstances of the death of an infant, seven weeks old, named Sidney Thomas Saunders, who died somewhat suddenly on Sunday, the day arranged for his christening. The Coroner informed the jury the inquest had been held consequent on a medical man withholding a certificate of death. The mother of deceased said her name was Selina Alice Saunders, and lived at Westham. She was married to James Thomas Saunders, who was a bombardier in the Royal Artillery. Her msiden name was Brazill, and the daughter of Martha Vaughan, of No. 11, Governor's-lane. Witness was married to her husband last year, and deceased was born on September 7th, of the present year. She was attended by a midwife, but had no doctor at her confinement. The baby was not strong, bat appeared pretty well until the last two days, when it refused the breast. She arranged to have the child christened at St. Mary's Church on the day it died at 3.40 in the afternoon. As her husband was not home on that day she and the baby went to her mother's house shortly after noon. Some time after Mrs. Vaughan cried out "Why, Alice, your child dying." Witness noticed deceased's breathing was short and difficult. A neighbour was called in and subsequently a doctor was summoned. Martha Vaugban, mother of the last witness, said she had been twice a widow. Witness corroborated the evidence generally of her daughter and said the treatment ordered by the medical man was carried out, but deceased died about eleven o'clock the same night. Georgina Mendenhall, living with her husband at No. 13. Governor's Lane, said on Sunday morning she was summoned to Mrs. Vaughan's house, and on examining deceased thought it was suffering from Bronchitis and recommended a doctor should be sent for, which was done. The medical man came immediately and ordered the baby to be rolled in flannel and given essence of beef. Deoessed's mother seemed very attached to it. Dr. Carolin, who is acting as locum tenes for Dr. Shook, said when he went to the house and found the baby in its mother's arms. It appeared very wanted. He attributed death to tuberculocis. Is his opinion medical aid should have been called in earlier. The Jury returned a verdict in accordance with the testimony.

DORSET MINOR CUP. WEYMOUTH UNITED V CHARLSTOWN STARS These teams met on the grounds of the latter in the second round on Wednesday, and a good game ended in favour of the United by three goals to nil. The ground was in bad condition, rendering good football out of the question. Charlstown won the toss and decided to play with the wind in their favour. The United kicked off with ten men, and Charlstown pressed severely for a few minutes, in which time a penalty was awarded to them. Knight took the kick, but Elliott tipped him the bar grandly, nothing resulting from the corner kick. The other player now turning up made the game more even, and after a few minutes Hoddinott tipped the leather with a master touch to Ozzard, and the latter scored No. 1 for the United. The United held their lead against a strong wind till half-time. From the re-start the United begin to press, and the Charlstown goalkeeper had a warm time of it, bringing off grand saves from Woods and Hoddinott but at last Porter beat him with a good shot. From the centre kick the United still pressed, Vye racing down the wing, centreing grandly, and, after a scrimmage in front of goal, Ozzaed netted No. 3. The Charlstown forwards broke away occasionally, but the United halves, Bill, Russell and Old Bat, being well supported by Mendenhall and Rockett, easily broke up the Charlestown rushes. Nothing further resulting the game ended in favour of the United by three goals to nil. Scoring would have been much larger had it not been for the sound goalkeeping of the Rev. S. Poole. The United team lined out as follows:- Goal. Elliott; backs, Rockett and Mendenhall: halves Gill, Russell, and Bartlett; forwards: Ozzard, Hoddinott, Woods, Porter, and Vye. [Note: Possibly his brother Albert George rather than James Frederick.]

211. Elizabeth Catherine Mendenhall

1884 June 14 - West London Observer:
SUDDEN DEATH. On Saturday afternoon Dr. Diplock held Inquest at the ‘‘Prince Arthur,” Golborne Road, Notting HilL relative to the death of Catherine Elizabeth Mendenhall, aged six years, the daughter of William Mendenhall, a labourer, residing at 10, Adair Road, Upper Westbourne Park. The commencement of the proceedings Mr. Heathcote, the foreman, asked the Coroner whether it was imperative to hold inquests on Saturdays. It was a day most inconvenient to tradesmen. It took them from their business at a serious loss. The Coroner reminded the jury that the district was a very large one. The child had been dead since Wednesday. A longer delay would have been serious. The evidence went to show that the deceased had been ailing for some time. There had been medical attendance for five weeks. The deceased was out for a walk on Whit Monday. The mother, on being questioned by the Coroner, said tha reason she had not called in a doctor, was her husband being out of work. Dr. W. Williams, of 6, Britannia Terrace, Kensal Road, deposed to the cause of death, being heart disease, and verdict accordance was returned.
