DISAPPEARING CHEQUES: GARAGE PROPRIETOR'S TRUST: Arrested at Stockport on a warrant issued in June last year, William Archer, 50, agent, of 326 Manchester Road, Manchester, was charged at Marylebone with fraudulently converting to his own use cheques entrusted to him by John Mendenhall, garage proprietor, of Queen's Mews, Bayswater. Archer said "I have had about £6O. I told Mendenhall 1 had not purchased any of the articles. If I had thought he was not accepting the bill I sent him I would have returned the whole of the money." Prosecutor said Archer was introduced to him in 1931 when he was looking for capital to improve his business. Archer agreed to raise it and turn the business into a limited company. Archer asked him for cheques for certain amounts for registration fees, etc. "He did nothing at all as far as I know." said prosecutor. Archer, who was committed for trial, pleaded not guilty and reserved his defence.

MISUSE OF FUEL SUMMONSES "Testing Gear Box" And "Moving Goods" Summoned at Ealing Police Court on Tuesday for the misuse of fuel John Albert Mendenhall of Daryngton-drive Greenford said he drove a car from Bayswater to his home and back in order to test it for a defective gear box. A petroleum officer said the car was owned by C C Wakefield and Co Ltd for the use their technical expert. He said that Mendenhall could have applied for petrol it is granted to mechanics and garages using trade number plates. Mendenhall said he never used a trade plate. He was fined 40s.
