1934 Aug 23 - Luton News and Bedfordshire Chronicle:
LUTON WINDOW CLEANER. Streatley Bungalow Story said to have been seen by two girls coming from a bungalow, “Arbra,” Sundonroad, Streatley, on Monday, Arthur Wallace Canderton, 33, window cleaner, 24, Mapleroad, Luton, was charged at a special court before Col. M. L. Chute on Tuesday with breaking and entering the dwelling house of Charies Shrive with intent to commit a felony. P.s. Sandell said about 4 p.m. the previous day he saw Joyce Mendenhall, aged 13, and Patricia Shrive, aged 9, who gave him the description of a man they said they had seen coming from the bungalow at 3 p.m. With Det.-Const, Birch he later visited 19, Gillam-street, Luton, where he saw Canderton, and asked him to account for his movements on Monday. Canderton said he had been round Sundon and Streatley cleaning windows. NOT AFRAID. Told that they wanted him to go to Dunstable to be put up for identification, Canderton said he was not afraid to come, but wanted to change his clothes and have tea first. He was allowed to have tea, but not to change nis clothes. At Dunstable he was put up for identification, and recognised by the two girls as the man they had seen coming from the bungalow. Charged, he said “I plead not gullty.” Joyce Mendenhail sald she lived at Hastings, and was on holiday. She went to the bungalow with her cousin’s niece, Patricia Shrive, and saw Canderton coming out from the back door. He locked the door, and put the key above the porch where it had been kept. He asked her if she knew the dog he had with him. She could not remember what reply she made, because it took her breath away to see him there. Patricia said she did not know the dog. CLEANER’S BARROW. The two of them took the key down, unlocked the door again, and went iato the house. She had previously noticed a window cleaner’s barrow with two ladders, outside. Patricia got what she wanted In the house, and when they came out, they saw the barrow and the man disappearing. She saw no other men except those working in a field. Canderton: What she says is lies. If she told the truth she would have told you she saw two men come from her gateway. Insp. Whitehorn asked for a remand in custody until Monday, saying his inquiries were not complete. He opposed an application by Canderton for bail, and Canderton was remanded in custody.

1934 Aug 30 - Luton news and Bedfordshire Chronicle:
Sent for Trial on Streatley Charge. Maintaining that he was quite innocent of the charge, Arthur Wallace Canderton, 33, window cleaner, living at 19, Gillamstreet, Luton, was committed for trial at the Beds Quarter Sessions by Mr. W. E, Seamons and Lady Xeens at Luton Division Court on Monday, on a charge of breaking and entering the dwelling house of Charles Shrive, at Streatley, with intent to commit a felony. Mrs. Minnie Emily Shrive, “Arbra,” Sundon-road, Streatley, said on August 20 she left the bungalow at 9.40 a.m. to go to Luton. Two casement windows were slightly open, but secured by a catch. The front and back doors were locked, the key of the latter being put by her on a ledge in the porch. NOTHING DISTURBED. She returned at 5.30 p.m., and in consequence of what she was told made a search of the bungalow. Nothing was missing and nothing had been disturbed. She had never employed anyone to clean the windows of the bungalow. Joyce Mendenhall, aged 13, of &, Boyneroad, Hastings, who is on holiday with her cousin. Mr. Mendenhali, at Markham End, Streatley, said on August 20, about 3 p.m. she went to the bungalow with Patricia Shrive, and saw Canderton coming out of the back door. He locked the door and put the key above the porch. He had a dog with him, and she thought he asked them if they knew whose dog it was, but she could not make out what he was saying. He walked towards the back gate, and she took the key down, unlocked the door, and went into the bungalow. When she entered the front gate she had noticed a window cleaner’s barrow by the back gate. She was in the house about a minute, and then went to Mrs. Mendenhall’s house. Mrs. Mendenhall returned to the bungalow with her. IDENTIFICATION PARADE. In the evening she went to Dunstable police station and identified Canderton from among nine men. Witness said there ‘were not two men going out of the back gate when she was there. The only other men about were those working in a field. Patricia Shrive, aged 9, said that as she and Joyce Mendenhall passed the living room window she saw Canderton shutting the living room door inside the bungalow. She later identified Canderton at Dunstable police station. Canderton said he was not the man seen coming from the bungalow. The girl had made a big mistake. “From what I can see of the two together,” he said, “it’s a well put up job.” [Reporting continues.]

Marriage Notes for Reginald Alfred Mendenhall and Kathleen Marion Tucker

1963 May 07 - Liverpool Daily Post:
Gaol for husband in contempt. An order that Reginald Alfred Mendenhall, an Architect of Havelock Road Hastings be committed to prison was made by a divorce Judge yesterday for breach of undertaking not to molest his wife and children. He was not court. Mr Justice Scarman said: Last August a reconciliation between this husband and wife but it is clear since January he has been molesting and indeed terrifying his wife and children. Mr Justice Scarman made an order on the application of his wife, Mrs Kathleen Marion Mendenhall, also of Hastings, who is petitioning for divorce. Mr Mendenhall was not in court yesterday but the judge said he was satisfied that he had been served with notice of the proceedings: “I can only infer that he is not here because he is not disposed to comply with the requirements of this court. Such defiance only merits one order; that he be committed to prison", added the judge.
